This past 12 January marked a new era for generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) when ICANN's expansion programme got under way. Currently there are around 30 generic domains like ".com"., plus country-code domains like ".es"·for Spain. But as from 12 January any legal person may apply to obtain and run a gTLD under whatever name it deems suitable, after undergoing an examination intended to ensure its management qualifications. This paves the way for the creation of gTLDs like ".yourbrand" and ".yourname".
